Victorian gas charges rise in lead-up to winter

Victorians are facing higher gas bills as winter approaches.

The St Vincent de Paul Society estimates an average household with gas central heating will pay $1000 for gas over the next six months.

Victorians are the nation’s biggest gas users, and are charged a “peak” seasonal price during high demand months.

Vinnies energy expert Gavin Dufty said the most expensive rates were from May to October or June to September, depending on distribution network and retailer.

“Gas tariffs are cheaper over the warmer months and highest when households need it most.” Mr Dufty said. “People entitled to a gas energy concession should make sure they are registered for it.”

A One Big Switch campaign — launched today in partnership with News Corp Australia, owner of the Herald Sun — aims to unlock an exclusive gas discount offer to help save on costs.

The campaign is looking for 10,000 Victorian households to sign up, obligation-free.

Victorian retail gas prices rose 4 to 10 per cent early this year, and are now increasing at a faster rate than electricity.
