Abbott government doubles down on fossil fuels



The Abbott government sparked a brawl by adopting a fossil fuel-friendly energy strategy that puts it sharply at odds with generators and climate and renewables activists.

The white paper said Australia should double down on fossil fuels and uranium to exploit an expected one third increase in global energy demand by 2040, but only gave a nod to climate change and renewable energy.

The generators' lobby slammed the inattention to climate change, and said uncertainty had made the sector "unbankable" and left the national energy market in chronic oversupply.

Energy Supply Association of Australia chief executive, Matthew Warren said a white paper that ignored climate change was incomplete because it is integral to the strategic direction and bankability of the industry.
